I have not been fishing in a long time. I've been around the sport for a long time however, so I know a lot, but it was a whole different thing putting it all together. We got in the boat at about 10:30am. We rowed down towards Purdy, stopping to cast. Lew caught the first few fish, bass and pickerel. The fish were small, the pickerel were angry and had no problem coming right up the boat to attack our lures. I tried a bright pink squid lure first, when I didn't get much response, lew suggested I try a topwater lure. I knew that required a lot of casting and "popping" the lure to get the fish's attention. When I stopped trying so hard, I caught my first at about 11:45 using the Chug Bug, with Pro Cure scent. It felt amazing. Keeping in mind that we were in the boat, I cheered and reeled him in. After the pictures and high fives, we continued down the reservoir. It wasn't long before I caught the 3.6 pounder. He took me by surprise and gave me quite a fight. I needed help getting him in and Lew grabbed the net. He gave my rod a good workout, but I'm happy I spent the extra money at this year's fishing expo on the rod. There were quite a few bites after that; we believe a pickerel actually took a bite out of one of my lures. Luckily I didn't catch one of those, all four of my fish were bass and all between 13 and 18 and a 1/2; all legal in about three weeks. I look forward to being able to keep them. The other wonderful thing aside from spending time with one of my favorite people was how peaceful it is on the water. Time flies and the only way you realize it is when you log your fish and look at your phone or when the train goes by. It's absolutely beautiful. Wanting to have the full experience, I offered to row back and managed to get us about 3/4 of the way back to the bank, with Lew finishing the trip. We got back safely, I got used to the boat (we were in it for 9 hours!) and got all packed up and to the train before the rains came. I can't wait to get out there again. Planning a trip for a bunch of us after bass season starts. Thank you Loubass2!
